Finding the “Root Cause” & Solving the Hashimoto's Puzzle

Everyone’s asking for recommendations lately: “Does anyone know a good naturopath or functional medicine doctor who can help me figure out my root cause?”

Working with someone who gets it and can help unravel everything for you sounds magical, especially after being told your labs are “normal” while you still feel like garbage. But let’s be real: functional doctors can be expensive, the waitlists are long, and not everyone truly understands Hashimoto’s or how layered these issues can be.

And even when you do find someone great, it’s often a quick session every 3 to 6 months, a new protocol, and then… you’re kind of on your own to figure out what’s working, what’s not, and what to do next.

What if you could start becoming your own root cause detective instead?

The truth is, symptoms like fatigue, thyroid issues, histamine reactions, and hormone chaos usually don’t come from just one thing. It’s more like a puzzle. Once you know what to look for, the picture starts coming together piece by piece, and you're suddenly making real progress on something beautiful.

But what are the pieces to focus on?

Here are some of the most common contributors I see in clients (and yep, I’ve dealt with most of them myself):

Gut health

Leaky gut, low stomach acid, microbiome imbalances, and food reactions can all trigger inflammation, nutrient depletion, and immune confusion. If you’re bloated, sensitive to everything, or reacting to foods you used to tolerate, this is worth a closer look.

Nutrient depletion

Even a solid diet might not be enough if digestion is impaired or your needs are higher due to stress, autoimmunity, or hormonal shifts. Iron, B12, magnesium, and zinc are big players here, and they’re often overlooked because it seems so basic.  Then there’s the whole iodine discussion (see my other post on that).

Blood sugar swings

Energy crashes, brain fog, hormone imbalances, and even histamine symptoms can all be tied to blood sugar regulation (even if your A1C looks fine).

Toxin exposure

Mold, chemical fragrances, plastics, cleaning products and beauty products can overwhelm detox pathways. When your body’s backed up, symptoms show up, and they often get mislabeled as something else.

Immune dysregulation

This includes things like histamine overload, past infections, or chronic inflammation. It’s especially relevant in autoimmunity like Hashimoto's, where the immune system has already gone rogue and started attacking things it shouldn't.

Stress and cortisol

Burnout, poor sleep, and an always-on nervous system can quietly sabotage everything else. Cortisol and thyroid hormones are closely linked.  If one’s off, the other struggles too.

So, How Do I Become My Root Cause Detective?

Sadly, there’s no one-size-fits-all lab test or supplement that magically “finds the root cause.” There is hope, though!

You live in your body every day. You have the power to track down what’s really going on. You just need to know where to start.

That’s why I created Back to Balance: to guide women beyond the big picture and help them start decoding what their body’s been trying to say all along. Your symptoms? Yes, they're annoying, but they’re your body’s way of communicating. This program helps you clear the roadblocks and get back in the driver’s seat with the education, tools, and a clear map to actually do something once you understand what your body needs.

And if you get stuck? I’m here for second opinions, lab requests & reviews, and personalized support (without making you take out a second mortgage to pay for it).

I believe in you. You can figure it out. You just need the right roadmap.

Inside Back to Balance, you’ll find symptom checklists, trackers, optimal lab ranges (with clear explanations), nutrition and supplement guidance, and the info you need to connect the dots. It's broken down into clear lessons so you can go at your own pace. There’s even a spreadsheet where you can input your symptoms and it automatically highlights what to focus on right now. As things shift, it shows you how to pivot and heal the next layer.

I've said this before, but I feel like it deserves repeating:

It was a long road back to health for me. I'm here to help you take the shortcut. Let Back to Balance be your map.
